What is ten paces?
Founded by Alyssa Nassner and Rachel Dougherty, Ten Paces & Draw originally began in 2011 as a small collaborative blog between friends. After art school graduation they were looking for community and a way to challenge themselves creatively. Alyssa and Rachel found that they had something special and the project quickly grew to include over 200 contributors within the three years it was running. The project went on hold in 2013 and was resurrected in 2018 in its current iteration. Our current mailing list is upwards of 350+ artists with more being added every round.
How the project works:
Illustrators create a sketch based on an assigned theme and return it to the Ten Paces moderators within the given deadline. Once all sketches for that theme have been submitted, moderators will redistribute the sketches at random, so each participant will receive another participant’s sketch. Then artists create a final piece based on the sketch they received, and submit that final for Ten Paces moderators to post.
In addition to running and hosting the project on Instagram, Alyssa also organizes Illustration Drink & Mingles in the Brooklyn area with the help of Chad Beckerman, and runs an annual Art Mart for local charity with the assistance of Maria Middleton. Find out more about these on our events page.
